The theory of art as type has its roots in the philosophy of Kant, and was developed in the early twentieth century by Roger Fry and Clive Bell. More lately, thinkers influenced by Martin Heidegger have interpreted art because the means by which a community develops for itself a medium for self-expression and interpretation. Larry Shiner has described nice art as “not an essence or a destiny but one thing we’ve made.
